The Reality of Solo Practice
Solo practice offers independence
but it also comes with pressure.
Running a solo practice is one of the hardest things an attorney can do — not because of the law, but because of everything else.
Most attorneys leave law school or a firm with strong legal skills and almost no training in how to run a business. No one teaches you how to set your rates, structure your client intake, manage your pipeline when cases slow down, or decide when to bring in outside help. You figure it out through trial and error often at the expense of your time, income, or sanity.
The attorneys who build sustainable solo practices don't wing it. They make deliberate decisions early about how their practice is structured and they get support when they need it.
That's what this advisory is built for.
Who This Is For
This service is designed for attorneys at different stages of solo practice:
Attorneys preparing to leave a firm and start their own practice
New solos trying to establish structure and direction
Established solo attorneys experiencing growth—or growing pains
Attorneys who feel overwhelmed managing both legal work and business operations
What We Work On
This is not abstract business consulting. Every engagement is grounded in how law practices actually operate — the demands of litigation, client expectations, and the realities of running a one-person firm.
Practice structure and positioning
Defining your services, target client base, and practice niche so you attract the right work and can say no to the wrong work with confidence. We build clarity around what your practice actually is and who it's for.
Risk management and issue spotting
Identifying the operational and professional risks in how your practice is structured — before they become problems. This includes conflict checks, engagement letter review, communication protocols, and practice-area specific risk factors.
Pricing and fee strategy
Setting rates that reflect your value, fit your market, and make your practice financially sustainable. Whether you bill hourly, use flat fees, or want to build a hybrid model — we work through the numbers together.
Workload management and scalability
Building a practice that can absorb more work without breaking. We look at where your time actually goes, identify what can be systematized or delegated, and create a realistic picture of how your practice can grow without burning you out.
Client intake and workflow systems
Building a consistent process for how clients find you, how they engage you, and how matters move through your office. A well-designed intake system reduces friction, filters bad clients early, and lets you focus on legal work instead of administrative chaos.
Operational decision-making
From the tools and software you use to the question of whether to hire support staff — practical guidance on the decisions that affect how your practice runs day to day.
Engagement Options
Every engagement starts with a free 20-minute strategy call. No sales pitch — just an honest conversation about where you are, what’s working, what isn’t, and whether this advisory is the right fit.
From there, engagements are structured around what you actually need:
Strategy Sessions (One-Time or As Needed)
A focused, high-level working session on a specific decision or challenge. Ideal for attorneys who need outside perspective on one thing, not an ongoing relationship.
Launch & Transition Advisory
Structured support for attorneys preparing to leave a firm and start their own practice. Covers practice design, pricing, initial client development, and launch sequencing.
Ongoing Advisory
A continuing relationship for attorneys who want a trusted strategic sounding board as their practice grows. Structured as a monthly retainer with regular sessions and availability between calls.
As your practice grows, you may also need overflow research and drafting support, or outside litigation counsel when a matter exceeds your bandwidth. AC Legal Consulting can provide both so the advisory relationship can evolve with your practice.
Built by someone who understands what you're up against
Why AC Legal Consulting
Ashley M. Cornwell, Esq. founded AC Legal Consulting after building her legal experience across criminal defense, appellate work, civil litigation, estate planning, real estate, and business law — in both firm environments and currently as a solo practitioner.
She understands litigation demands, client pressure, and the reality of running a lean practice without a support network around you. The guidance here is grounded in that experience, not in generic business frameworks that don't account for how law firms actually work.
“Strong cases are built through careful preparation, clear reasoning, and strategic thinking — and so are strong practices.”
Common questions
Do you only work with Florida attorneys?
No. While Ashley is a licensed Florida attorney, the advisory services offered — practice strategy, systems design, pricing, and operational guidance — are available to solo attorneys in all 50 states. Formal legal representation before a court or bar is limited to Florida unless admitted pro hac vice.
How is this different from a business coach?
A business coach gives general entrepreneurship advice. This advisory is built specifically for law practices, which have unique ethical obligations, billing structures, client relationship dynamics, and operational constraints that general business coaching doesn't account for. You're working with a practicing attorney who has lived these challenges.
What does it cost?
Engagements are priced on a flat-fee or monthly retainer basis depending on what you need. Pricing is discussed during your free strategy call. No surprises before you commit to anything.
Is this confidential?
Completely. Every conversation and all work product is handled with strict professional discretion. AC Legal Consulting operates as a confidential extension of your practice — your clients, your firm, and your colleagues will never know you're working with an outside advisor unless you choose to share it.
When is the right time to start?
Before you need it. The attorneys who get the most out of this advisory engage before a crisis when they're planning a launch, noticing early signs of strain, or thinking seriously about how to grow. If you're already overwhelmed, that's fine too, but earlier is always better.
If you are starting, growing, or rethinking your solo practice, AC Legal Consulting provides practical guidance grounded in real legal experience.
